What is Terrorism?

Updated 2002.12.19 – Describing victims as "civilians" rather than "non-combatants" is another ruse the media uses to equate Israeli victims with their terrorist predators. As the media paints it, all 'Palestinian' terrorists are "civilians." If two 'Palestinian' terrorists blow themselves up but only manage to kill one civilian Jew the media reports the score of "civilians" killed as two 'Palestinians' and one Israeli Jew. The reality is, however, that in this example only one non-combatant was killed… the Israeli victim…!

As Dr. Boaz Ganor, Dir. Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center's International Policy Institute for Counter-terrorism has noted (The Jerusalem Post, 2002.12.17, p. 4), "If attacks are carried out against military targets, whether the latter are combatants or not, they should be defined as guerrilla warfare." It occurs to me that it's also possible that a situation could arise in which people may someday be terrorized based on their age, sex, physical characteristic other than race, or some criteria other than political, religious or racial.

Here, then, is my amended definition of "terrorism", adapted from Title 22 of the U.S. Code: "An action or campaign of premeditated violence intentionally and specifically directed against a civilian group of non-combatants."
