"Ultra-Orthodox Sha"s Desecrating the Name"

1999.06.21 Israel Information Service – ha-Tzoph•ëh [Ultra-Orthodox Kha•reid•im Hebrew newspaper] "interprets [Ultra-Orthodox Kha•reid•im] Rav O•vad•yâh Yo•seiph's recent statements as an admission that Arᵊyeih Deri will continue to perform a leadership role within [Ultra-Orthodox Kha•reid•im] Sha"s – which the editors consider nothing less than "a desecration of God's name and an expression of contempt for the political system." Moreover, the paper is concerned by the "problematic" nature of Rav Yo•seiph's implied suggestion that money, needed to cover the debts of Sha"s' institutions, can resolve all the differences blocking Sha"s' participation in the Bâ•râq government. Ei•hud Bâ•râq, according to the paper, committed not to accept a phony resignation from Arᵊyeih Deri and, "since this is precisely what has happened," it would appear that Bâ•râq will have to suffice with a narrow government. "Bâ•râq is not to be envied, and neither are his party colleagues who are interested in a reconciliation with Sha"s."

"ha-Tzoph•ëh, in its second editorial, welcomes the various points of agreement between the National Religious Party and One Israel on issues such as "the Ne'eman conversion formula, the ministerial committee on [village development]…, continued construction in all parts of Jerusalem, the prohibition of private, anti-religious initiatives, and the strengthening of the Chief Rabbinate." The editors suggest that this could be a harbinger of a "renewed rapprochement between Labor and the religious public."
