2003.07.25 – "Today, I saw a kids' cartoon based on the story of the Yᵊtzi•âh. Then I thought back to our book discussion on [Kaufmann’s book] The Religion of Israel.

"The material in your [Kha•vᵊr•utâ, on-line] distance learning is mainly oriented towards people who already accept the divine validity of the Ta•na"kh, namely, Christians and "Messianics." Therefore you can proceed to show that the Ta•na"kh doesn't say what they claim it says, and furthermore that the historical Ribi Yᵊho•shua cannot be the personality that the church has made him out to be, based on both the objective historical record and the logical self-consistency of the Ta•na"kh – which Christians claim to be following. Case solved for anyone in that category who has ears to hear.

"As a member of MHJC and part of the 90+% modern-oriented Jewish community, I'd like to generate more discussion oriented towards questions we may have (this is not a criticism, it's just a humble request. :) ).

If I may interject here, ëÌÈì äÇëÌÈáåÉã! I applaud your inquiry and fully agree. This is one place in the Orthodox Jewish community where you won’t hear "Don’t ask." I encourage you to do çÂæÈøÈä áÌÀùÑÀàÅìÈä. Those who truly follow úÌåÉøÈä do so in truth, in the real – rational – world.

"That ties back the first paragraph. What convincing proof do we have for the events of the Yᵊtzi•âh? What evidence is there for the sojourn, the Mak•ot, that a large group of ≅1.5 million slaves left Mi•tzᵊrayim en masse during the reign of Tuthmoses III (one of the most powerful kings of Mi•tzᵊrayim with a historical record marked by conquest and expansion) and soujourned in Mi•dᵊbâr Sin•ai for 40 years or so? Are these events independently verifiable? Can a really convincing case be made? So far what I've seen from others is an attempt to show a concurrence of conditions that would make it possible that the Biblical events could have occurred as described, in response to scholars who say that it's impossible and a complete fabrication. For some, this is enough. But the more skeptical need to be shown that the weight of historical probability is clearly on the side of the believers in Tor•âh

These kinds of questions are the ones that the 90% want answered. You're quite right that a recourse to "Rash"i says" in response to the above is a self-defeating non-starter. Is a more satisfying answer available?

This is an excellent beginning for a continuing discussion. Clearly, though, the vastness of the wide-ranging concepts involved in answering your question cannot be condensed into a few paragraphs. Realizing some time ago that a more comprehensive and in-depth treatment is required, I’ve been working for some months on a docu-novel about the Yᵊtzi•âh, aspiring to an entertaining "Ben Hur" style (though not in quality), precisely to demonstrate this. The new docu-novel is entited The Mirrored Sphinxes and subtitled Moses’ Search for the Holy Link to the Eternal World, The Search That Produced the Holy Ark, Intertwined With The Love Story That Shaped Civilizations.

No discussion of the Yᵊtzi•âh can be meaningful in a vacuum. If there is no Creator then the entire discussion is a complete waste of typing. If, on the other hand, there is a Creator, then many of the questions levelled at the Yᵊtzi•âh are logically invalid and must, therefore, be excluded from consideration. So the question of whether there is a Creator is a prerequisite to discussing the Yᵊtzi•âh. I’ll keep this as short as I can by leaving off with this question for you to take up the next chapter at this point. When you bring in the next chapter, I’ll archive this one and we’ll continue archiving and updating so that future readers will have access but this conference room won’t grow uncontrollably.
