Some Ultra-Orthodox Jews are panicked and desperate to suppress, or discredit, a note, left by their own late, world-renowned "Qabâlist-Spiritualist of the Generation," Rav éÄöÀçÈ÷ ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé, æú"ì, posted on his own website home page (until a firestorm forced them to delete it), encoding the name of the Mâ•shiakh in a Hebrew notarikon.

A few months before he died, the "Qabâlist-Spiritualist of the Generation", one of the nation’s most prominent Ultra-Orthodox rabbis, Rav éÄöÀçÈ÷ ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé – to whom Israel's Chief Rabbis looked up to as a Tza•diq, encoded the name of the Mâ•shiakh as a notarikon in a small note, which he requested would remain sealed until a year after his death.

"[Rav éÄöÀçÈ÷ ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé] was known for his photographic memory and his memorization of the [Ta•na"kh], the Ta•lᵊmud, Rash"i and other Jewish writings. He knew Jewish sages and celebrities of the last century and rabbis who lived in the Holy Land and kept the faith alive before the State of [Yi•sᵊr•â•eil] was born… When he died, more than 200,000 people joined the funeral procession on the streets of [Yᵊru•shâ•layim] to pay their respects as he was taken to his final resting place."

Lucidly aware of the fiery controversy his note would ignite, Rav éÄöÀçÈ÷ ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé left instructions that the note not be opened until one year after his death. "With one of Israel’s most prominent rabbis indicating the name of the [Mâ•shiakh] is [Yᵊho•shua], it is understandable why his last wish was to wait one year after his death before revealing what he wrote."

"When the name of Yᵊho•shua appeared in Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé’s message, ultra-Orthodox Jews from his [Na•khal•at Yi•tzᵊkhaq Yᵊshiv•âh] (seminary) in [Yᵊru•shâ•layim] argued that their master did not leave the exact solution for decoding the [Mâ•shiakh’s] name." This, despite the fact that, while they conceded the authenticity of the note, the note itself explicitly states that the name of the Mâ•shiakh is given in the notarikon (see photo).

"Israel Today spoke to two of [Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé]’s followers in [Yᵊru•shâ•layim] who admitted that the note was authentic, but confusing for his followers as well. 'We have no idea how the [Rav] got to this name of the [Mâ•shiakh],' one of them said."

Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé's Description of the Mashiakh

"Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé’s grandson, [Rav Yo•seiph ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé], said his grandfather spoke many times during his last days about the coming of the [Mâ•shiakh] and redemption through the [Mâ•shiakh]. His spiritual portrayals of the [Mâ•shiakh]—reminiscent of New Testament accounts—were published on [his own official website] Kaduri.net, "insisting it was authentic," and Nfc:

“It is hard for many good people in the society to understand the person of the [Mâ•shiakh]. The leadership and order of a [Mâ•shiakh] of flesh and blood is hard to accept for many in the nation. As leader, the [Mâ•shiakh] will not hold any office, but will be among the people and use the media to communicate. His reign will be pure and without personal or political desire. During his dominion, only [Tzëdëq] and [ë•mët] will reign.

“Will all believe in the [Mâ•shiakh] right away? No, in the beginning some of us will believe in him and some not. It will be easier for non-religious people to follow the [Mâ•shiakh] than for Orthodox people.

“The revelation of the [Mâ•shiakh] will be fulfilled in two stages: First, he will actively confirm his position as [Mâ•shiakh] without knowing himself that he is the [Mâ•shiakh]. Then he will reveal himself to some Jews, not necessarily to wise [Tor•âh] scholars. It can be even simple people. Only then he will reveal himself to the whole nation. The people will wonder and say: ‘What, that’s the [Mâ•shiakh]?’ Many have known his name but have not believed that he is the [Mâ•shiakh]

“When he comes, the [Mâ•shiakh] will rescue [Yᵊru•shâ•layim] from foreign religions that want to rule the city,” Kaduri once said. “They will not succeed for they will fight against one another.”

The Note

Those of you who have been studying I•vᵊr•it will see that it reads:

Subject: Notarikon of Mâ•shiakh

‫"éøéí äòí åéåëéç ùãáøé åúåøúå òåîãéí"

Signed by me this month of compassion, 5765
Yitzkhaq Kaduri

"He will elevate the kindred and prove that our Oral-Exegeses and his Tor•âh [still] stand)."

As the red-highlighted first letters reveal, the note encrypts the name éäåùåò, a variant spelling of éäåùò.

Ultra-Orthodox Suppression & Deception

News of Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé's note has already elicited the evil work of deceivers, claiming that the note includes the phrase ôÌÀðÅé îÉùÑÆä ëÌÄôÀðÅé äÇçÇîÌÈä is part of the note. The photo clearly shows that to be a bald-faced lie. The reason these deceivers are doing their best to mislead the public is to claim that the note is a fake forged by a âÌÇáÌÇàé of Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé named éäåùò, whose mother's name was ôÌÇîÌÀëÈä. (The spurious phrase is a notarikon for ôÌÇîÌÀëÈä.) Even if Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé had a âÌÇáÌÇàé named éäåùåò, and even if the âÌÇáÌÇàé's mother was named ôÌÇîÌÀëÈä,

  1. he would not be called éäåùò ôÌÇîÌÀëÈä,

  2. there is no such line in the note, and

  3. the spurious phrase is an idolatrous reference comparing îÉùÑÆä to the sun-God!

Nevertheless, our carefulness relative to the alleged ossuary of Pâ•qid Ya•a•qov "ha-Tza•diq" Bën-Yo•seiph Bën-Dâ•wid – that was initially declared to be , later declared a forgery, then still later proven that the charges of forgery were false – was well advised then and caution remains the proper stance in this case as well. (Update 2008.04.26: claims that the ossuary of Pâ•qid Ya•a•qov "ha-Tza•diq" Bën-Yo•seiph Bën-Dâ•wid was a forgery turned out to be Christian-fueled wishful thinking. Science has demonstrated conclusively that it is authentic.) We still don't know that this note is in the handwriting of Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé or, if not, whether the person who wrote it was regularly (or especially) authorized to write on behalf of Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé. Until all of the details are verified it remains interesting but we remain carefully skeptical with an open mind.

Update 2014: Concerning the handwriting, his son presented earlier writing as evidence to argue it did not match the note. However, this has proven not at all persuasive as the handwriting in later years is always less smooth and all contemporary handwriting samples match the note.

In any case, the note can only refer, in this age, to the Nᵊtzâr•im and the inextricable linking of the name éäåùò with "elevating [the intellectual knowledge and logic] prov[ing] that… both the Oral Exegesis and Tor•âh [still] stand[s]" was both careful and ingenious in precluding Christian interpretations.

It turns out, however, that Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé's encryption merely replicates the pᵊshut of each:

  1. the warning of Dᵊvâr•im 13.1-6 relative to

  2. Zᵊkhar•yâh 3!

However, Rav ëÌÇãÌåÌøÄé has encrypted more than his followers have published (or realized). Each word of the notarikon also encodes the keyword to a passage of Tor•âh that is both central to the Mâ•shiakh that is particularly pertinent our time:
