Book Review: Understanding Judaism (Blech)

Inquiry: Shalom Pâqid Yirmәyâhu, ha-Tzadiq,

This was a very enlightening and thorough book that covered many areas of significance concerning life and Torah from a religious Jewish perspective. Rabbi Blech answered a number of questions comparing Jewish thought versus Christian thought and gave excellent examples stated by Talmud, Sages, Rabbis and many others. One of the many things that stood out to me was the explanation of Oral Law. I’ve been trying to understand the oral law versus the written law and the explanation given is that the written law is the shorthand summary of an entire oral discussion previously heard. An excellent read for those coming out of Christianity.

His conceptions of each are good but anachronous. First, the principles are compiled (clearly drawn from the sometimes cross-tribally conflicting 12 sets of traditional tribal laws – achieving reconciliation with continuity), then written down (Mosh•ëhꞋ  at Har Sin•aiꞋ ). Only subsequently, as Tor•âhꞋ  was applied by the Bât•eiꞋ -Din in actual life situations, were the intricacies of case law – mish•pâtꞋ  / Ha•lâkh•âhꞋ  – discussed, argued and determined. This is also clear historically. Ta•na"khꞋ  dates back to Har Sin•aiꞋ  (and 12 tribal traditions date back to the 12 sons of Yi•sә•râ•eilꞋ ) while the provision for Bât•eiꞋ -Din and a formal Beit Din system of adjudicating mish•pâtꞋ  / Ha•lâkh•âhꞋ  was only later suggested by Yit•roꞋ  and subsequently implemented by Mosh•ëhꞋ  (Shәm•otꞋ  18).

Keep up the good work.
